Officials Issue Public Health Tips to Address Virus Season

Morristown, New Jersey – Town of Morristown in partnership with the Morristown Medical Center issued public health tips in addressing the virus season, including other types of respiratory diseases.

The entire United States is in the midst of the virus season, considering the different types of viruses such as the rhinovirus, influenza, and the varieties of the Enterovirus (EV-D68). Updated records indicate 14 confirmed cases of Enterovirus in 8 New Jersey Counties.

The EV-D68 can be easily transmitted through close contact with infected individuals. It could also be transmitted through contact with objects or surfaces contaminated with the said virus, and then touching the nose, mouth, or eyes. People who are infected with the virus will need to visit urgent care clinics as soon as possible.

Additionally, EV-D68-infected people do not show signs or symptoms, although some indicate mild symptoms. Infections like the EV-D68 can become very serious, and would need urgent care and immediate treatment. Common symptoms include coughing, sneezing, runny nose, fever, body and/or muscle aches.

Thus, the public health tips suggest that both parents and caregivers must be aware that children suffering from a weak immune system and related conditions like asthma, might suffer from further complications. They may also require services from an urgent care clinic or hospital for supportive therapy. Parents should consult with their physicians if their children become ill.

Officials Issue Public Health Tips to Address Virus SeasonThe public health tips also recommend that washing of hands could help in the prevention of respiratory diseases such as flu. However, a 20-second hand-washing should be done in the most proper way, including water and soap. Hand Sanitizers and similar products are not effective to fight viruses. Health officials also suggest avoiding touching the eyes, mouth, and nose without proper hand-washing.

Health officials strongly advise adults to disinfect surfaces, toys, and door knobs frequently, especially when a sick person is around.

Morristown Medical Center President Doctor avid Shulkin advised parents not to send their children to school if symptoms of illness occur. His agency also encourages parents to get in touch with their health care providers immediately, whether symptoms of flu or colds occur.

Mayor Timothy Dougherty of Morristown said winter season is fast approaching, thus, the need for adequate information about public health tips and safety to the community.
