How the P2EP Student’s Program Contributed to Improve Human Nutrition?

Catawba County, North Carolina – Catawba college students continually gather data in an aim to improve human nutrition.

Five college interns at the Kannapolis Campus of North Carolina Research have significantly helped in gathering data for a human nutrition database project. Their primary aim is to gather and organize a knowledge database that would augment the human health and nutrition. The Catawba college students work in collaboration with 20 health care institutions, technology, academic, and corporate partners.

Hence, the Plant Pathways Elucidation Project (P2EP) was instigated as a collaborative research since the summer of 2013. The project has brought North Carolina students, university scientists, and industry professionals to work together.

The program’s primary goal is identifying and mapping plant pathways in food crops. By doing so, they can understand better how plant pathways function, leading to better food crop production and to improve human nutrition at the same time.

The issues concerning malnutrition and under-nutrition need urgent care, and need to be addressed quickly. Thus, each student focused on different food crops such as fruits and vegetables. Ashton Pryor and Allison Baucom, both Biology majors focused on small fruits. Maria Gurski studied blueberries, while Fernando Guerrero and Titus Hunt focused on broccoli.

The interns went to a crop-picking activity at the Piedmont Research Station, back to the laboratory wherein they examined their crops’ attributes and nutrients. In their urgent care clinic, the students studied the sugar content, lycopene, and acidity of their products. They created genome linkage maps, analyzing the sequence of each fruit and vegetable.

Farmers could use the lab findings and genomic library as their urgent care clinics and references while choosing the best parent plants for breeding. Through such data, farmers will also identify the desirable attributes to produce better crops, and improve human nutrition eventually.

The chairman of biology in the Catawba Dr. Connie Lowery said she was impressed with the students’ findings, as well as their exposure to brand new concepts. Internships provide students with the most valuable experiences, Lowery added. They can likewise build networks of contacts throughout their college years, professional school, towards their own careers.

The P2EP Research Symposium indicated how the interns have become fruitful through their knowledge base project. The two-year internship has produced a lot of entries, including 433 million pair links and 16 million unique identifiers.
